"washington post" abc news poll americans think governor romney is best suited for fixing the economy. are those concerns and capabilities reflected in the media coverage of this race? alan, let's start with you. >> why don't you started with me.

clinton said electricking romney is -- electing romney is worse than hurricane sandy. when you see co2 continue to go up and the global temperature goes up, levels off, and you can associate it with the natural cyclical pattern of the oceans and you look at the big picture, and also a lot of these people are just weather voyeurs. what if you've been studying since the day you were born? some of them just study it now. >> i was conceived during hurricane hazel. >> tmi. >> what is that? >> too much info. >> i'm just saying. your son is sitting here, too. >> he knows the story. >> all right. thanks, hurricane joe. we'll continue to track sandy's path and the destruction she leaves behind. you're looking at a live shot. this is lower manhattan in new york city. it is in the dark and at the moment it's underwater. we'll bring you the very latest developments plus tonight we have a race in seven days. more than 60 million people are likely to feel the impact of this storm. both president obama and mitt romney were forced to cancel campaign events. will this impact what happens with a week to

clinton would be the chief obama surrogate in this final week. now writing a rebuttal apparently to the des moines register to their endorsement of mitt romney. >> we don't need to be on the plane with bill clinton to know what mode he's in. he's polishing that op-ed he's writing for the des moines register, clearly intended as a rebuttal to the paper's endorsement of mitt romney. bill clinton will be the way he was in 1996 when running for his own re-election trying to get as many campaign stops in as possible. with the president sidelined it's bigger than it was before. >> hillary clinton in bosnia today, on a trip to algeria yesterday, bosnia today, talking about how much she thinks about new york and sort of this wonderful irony all around. of course as the former senator from new york, she was pointing out her heart is there with the victims. >> the level of -- even the 2008 campaign, the idea at the end of the 2008 primary campaign you would say bill clinton is barack obama's most important surrogate and may get him over the line in some of these places you would be laughed

of them. is bill clinton turning into the party's go-to guy to pick up the slack of what the president obviously can't be out there doing because his attention is needed for what's taking place with sandy recovery? >> sure, if you can't have the president or the vice president, certainly bill clinton, former president clinton is at the top of the list. he is well loved and respected here in ohio and throughout much of the rest of the country, and i think he's doing a wonderful thing for the president and understanding the circumstances of this storm, but, thomas, i think both campaigns have now come down to a get out the vote effort. i don't think people will be much influenced by tv ads and going forward. i think we are in a place -- whichever campaign is most successful in actually getting their people to the polls and that will be the campaign they think will win. >> what do you think is taking place in ohio right now with the fact that mitt romney is not having campaign events and as chuck pointed out he's shifted into more relief-type efforts and people are sending me tweets that

a president who shared these beliefs, a guy named bill clinton. [booing ] >> no, no, don't boo, vote. vote. voting is the best revenge. at the time mitt romney said bill clinton's plan would hurt the economy and kill jobs. turns out his math back then was just as bad as it is today. [cheers and applause] >> because by the end of president clinton's second term america created 23 million new jobs and incomes were up and poverty was down and our deficit became the biggest surplus in history. so, our ideas were tried and tested and they worked. their ideas were also tried and they didn't workout so well. remember, in the eight years after bill clinton left office they tried this top down economics, they tried this you're on your own econo

years ago. >> sean: that was is former president bill clinton at a campaign stop in florida earlier today. seems like president obama's most high profile supporter is finally coming to terms with the dwindling excitement surrounding the anonned one and he is certainly not alone. even the new york times cannot ignore governor romney's forward momentum and is isitting that pennsylvania s in play. so it pennsylvania support of the bishops jet a possibility? here to talk with us is fox news contributor charles krauthammer. you and i were talking off air. what a back handed complian cot of bill clinton. seems like the president goes and gives christie a hug and promises he will be acting all presidential and then flies off again to of all places las vegas. and since then one in three gas stations are closed. six hours people are waiting in line for gasoline. tempers are flaring. electricity is scarce. and people aren't getting the help they need. janet napolitano says well, we will get it to you as soon as possible. this is five days into this. and i'm thinking that whatever goodwill the

with the latest. >> good evening, bret. this is a cable sent to secretary of state clinton's office at the state department showing that there was emergency meeting on august 15 at the u.s. mission in benghazi. significant because that is less than a month before the terror attack there. at this emergency meeting we're told, based on the cable, there was concern expressed by officials on the ground in benghazi that there were al-qaeda training camps there. there could be problems for from that. the cable says the regional security officer expressed concern with the ability to defend the post in event of the coordinated attack due to limited manpower, security measures, weapons capabilities and post nation is up -- host nation support and the overall size of the compound. they also in this cable say if the emergency meeting they describe the security situation in benghazi, as "trending negatively." they also said that they would be asking for more protection from the government. we know the calls for more security were not heeded. also important to note, though, that the cable says that the intel

using. somebody they had put out on their own. not quite the level of bill clinton for obama but not bad. you know. marco rubio and chris christie sort of are the two sort of stars that can get people on their own. and here he is with obama. i tell you, you see him -- here's another sort of fascinating thing to watch. the number of photographs that people asked to take with the two of them, and they kept taking them. what are they going to say? you have these people at the shelter or their homes and they're both emotional, upset, and excited to meet the president and the governor. and here they were posing for pictures together. the two of them. with constituents in new jersey too. that part of it was a little surreal, especially when i sort of remind myself that today's wednesday and election day is, i don't know, not even 200 hours away. >> an extraordinary day. chuck todd, thank you very much for joining us tonight. >> you got it. >>> across the river from new york city, hoboken, new jersey remains mostly flooded and mostly without power. as much as a foot of water flooded into the ci

. hillary clinton and president obama come out and try to set the record straight. right now and not spin everything. we don't -- we don't want the details. we just want answers and want accountability and want people to resign if they have to. >> brian: scott, two quick points to get to in a minute. real quick, when you hear the secretary of defense say i didn't want to put my guys into harm's way in uncertain situation, you are a navy seal. don't you always go into uncertain situations? >> if i got the call right now, right now to go to libya or anywhere else to help folks and they needed me, i would be there right now. every single military member, cia folks, state department guys, security, anybody would step up to the plate and run out there in harm's way to save fell will he americans. there is no doubt about it. >> brian: you think he was disingenuous when he said that because you and delta force and guys like you do this all the time? >> folks like us and that are out there right now. that's what we do. that's what we would do. i think it was a misleading statement at best. >> bri

-in-chief and not only this time around, but this failure disqualifies hillary clinton from being a future commander-in-chief. as she says the buck also stops with her and clearly, she is not qualified to be president of the united states if she watched these people die. >> alisyn: brian, why haven't we been able to get more straight forward answers from the administration? >> we're waiting, i believe you said it right, a measured response, the republican house is doing an investigation, let's be fair and give it time. and i understand there's a timetable, let's be clear about presidential issues when it comes to mitt romney, number within where does he stand on endorsement of richard mourdock, and rape and have children of rape. >> and benghazi, we're talking about-- >> and the second point, the second point he needs to talk about john sununu and racist remarks he's made in general colin powell and talk about the points-- >> no, leadership is the recognize we're not political party we're right versus wrong, getting answers. four men dead in benghazi and part the of the conversation, why we're not g

employ. you know, james what president clinton said in the democratic convention. no president even myself could have solved the mess we were given . >> it is a fact-free argument. president obama said he would solve it and making promises. and that shart testimonies the store store and the effort to say it was bush's fault. we were growing faster in the early president obama term. in the year 2010 when obamacare and dodd-frank enacted it was very slow. you want to point out the difference. there was more growth in the beginning of president obama's presidency than now? >> we are going in the wrong direction. forward is not the term for the way the economy is headed now even if that is the obama campaign slogan. and you lock at history of recoveries. this one stands out. we ought to be further along in a rebound, faster growth more employment and it is it not happening. >> gretchen: you question the moving forward with the policies and what the policies might be to continue the recovery with regard to taxes. >> that's what is scary right now. you can see very weak growth and then we

and president clinton on monday but the rally is canceled. virginia is ready to get to the polls and the president will carry virginia and as four years ago when virginia was a state that put the president over the edge in terms of winning we hope to claim that title again this year. >>chris: senator johnson, wisconsin has not gone for a republican since ronald reagan back in 1984. how much do you think that romney will be helped by the big organization that governor scott walker had to build to hold off the recall vote last june? >>guest: well, it is helpful. we have a strong ground game here and it is interesting that the most recent rasmussen poll was dead even 49 to 49 and those that have made up their mind or for sure will vote, governor romney got 51 percent versus president obama at 41 or 48. yesterday, the issue benghazi is bubbling up. people are demanding answers from the administration. that will have a big impact in the state of wisconsin. >>chris: we will get to benghazi later in the discussion. senator udall i was surprised to learn close to 80 percent of voters in

about it for the first time listening to your broadcast will i can say that i believe secretary clinton made the right decision here. to order an independent, objective investigation and review and that's underway. sometimes these things take time. and they don't lend themselves to people's political endars. i also think, the two most important issues getting lost is, what can we do to upgrade embassy security, and that means that republicans and democrats should fully fund in the congress and receive security. and can we go after the groups that killed ambassador chris stevens and his colleagues? president obama said he will do that and i trust he is trying to do that. i think that's where we should be putting our attention, especially this week. >> a final question to you. is it possible that we may never know why certain crucial pieces of information that were known to some people very early on were not shared with the american public? that we'll never know whether there was a concerted decision and who made it? >> well, that would be a shame. it would be a problem, a travesty. and i

, and secretary of state, hillary clinton, demanding 18 what they knew of the attack on benghazi. and my guest says the president may want to put off bragging. explain. >>guest: well, it is almost incomprehensible and more than many can take that we have a domestic tragedy at the same time we have this horrible, horrible preventable national security tragedy. what we finding out now is that there will be more blame, so much blame to go around starting at the white house, when they knew it, what knew and who made the decision not to rescue our form c.i.a. operatives and our military. it is almost incomprehensible when we started to overthrow qadaffi a year ago, over a year ago, we had this exact discussion. it didn't take a crystal ball to tell you and tell your viewers this is exactly what the end result was going to be. we throw out a known quantity, a very, very bad guy, qaddafi, we understand that and we arm, as i said them, al qaeda, hamas, muslim brotherhood, and what do we do? we put our guys out in harm's way and lead them to slaughter. this is absolutely going to be in my opinion will

to manipulate media coverage? >> to quote bill clinton, they think you're stupid. it's more a play for the media being stupid, saying look here's a chance to even it up, the press loves to even it up and pennsylvania is a way -- >> are they trying to get obama to put resources into pennsylvania? >> it is part of it. there is an element of a head fake to see can we shake something lose here, can we see movement in numbers, can we make them spend time there, maybe once you're playing those kinds of games you know that your path to 70 is limited. as you said you better get ohio because pennsylvania is garbage. >> when people tune in on tuesday night and they see you lawrence o'donnell reading these election results. >> no, they're going to see rachel maddow. i will be sitting somewhere nearby being very quiet. >> there's a funny thing where they're going to look at the bottom of the screen and see these votes coming in, it's going to start at zero and go. but that's an artificiality. he has what looks to be a billing lead there and that is concrete. that's not polling. that's ballots. >> part of th

. they are possibly inlet game. >> yeah, you saw former president clinton in minnesota. filmthey say maybe they are worried about that for the president. >> yes, where the campaigns are going and where they spend money. it is not just a head fake. it is usually defense. we know that in ohio. but something that makes him so a trend. >> if we see florida that is tight, and that will be a sign. virginia closes at 7:00. if that is going, i think we should see how the race is shaping up on tuesday night by seveno'clock. >> that is early. >> but that will tell us how the rest of the night is starting to shape up. it could be a late, late night on tuesday and into wednesday morning. >> that's what i am hearing the analyst >> brian: >> i closed my show, when i go back to dc, i will know who the president will be. i should have said i should know who the president should be. >> unless you delay your trip home. >> and we would love to have you. >> thank you for stopping by. >> ahead of tuesday, remember to tune in texas american special hosted by megan kelly and bret baier. we look forward to that.

and mika are hosts of "morning joe." >> one thing we do know, bill clinton is going to be very nervous about having to fill all that space by himself today without barack obama. he's going to do great in orlando, obviously. but mitt romney had momentum. you look at ohio, ohio poll that came out, had him dead locked. minnesota poll, three. gets the endorsement from "des moines register." in that state that's a big deal. this is mitt romney's best weekend and it stops. the momentum stops. you don't know how it freezes the race but you certainly know that it's a new dynamic into the race and it changes everything with a week to go. >> the question is how. a lot of people have different theories which candidate it benefits. ate moment for the president to be commander-in-chief, to be presidential, but there are pitfalls with that. >> it sure is. there are pitfalls because something could go wrong and people could maybe perhaps, the president isn't doing enough. but if this storm is as big as it portends to be, expect command centers up and down the coast and the not be very visible at all

his administration through susan rice, jay carney, the secretary of state hillary clinton and the president himself continue for 17 days to say something that they knew, peter, they knew was not true. and why? why on earth have we continued to ignore situation videotape drone flying overhead. why was there no attempt to send in some kind of rescue, diversionary tactic its. these are simple questions that layman can ask. i think it's one of the most embarrassing chapters of u.s. history. there are lives. -- there are lies, there are coverups. unlike bill clinton and monica lewenski, there are four dead americans as a result. we absolutely deserve an answer. it's not about the election. i wish this weren't happening so close to an election. because it is easy to say this is just election year politics. this is not. this is the -- really the integrity of the united states government on the line. >> governor, why do we have to wait until after the election to have these hearings? >> well, because i think there is a good reason the white house doesn't want all the time line, al

people are seeing that. >> and you mentioned florida as well. former president bill clinton making five stops, i believe, there as well. so pulling out all the big guns, if you will. yourself included on that list. i'm curious, though, you talk about out west in your home state, this new romney ad. it was an unannounced ad. but basically it starts off -- it's a spanish language ad. it starts off by saying who supports barack obama? and then it goes on to show the niece of fidel castro, mariel lacaslmariela castro and shows hugo chavez when he recently said that he would vote for president obama. the obama campaign said mitt romney continues to play chavez's game, giving him the attention that he thrives on that he doesn't deserve. this ad, sir, is being described as a last-minute push to try to win over latino voters. do you believe it would be effective? >> no, it's not going to be effective because it has no factual basis. that relationship with cuba and venezuela is pretty frosty on human rights grounds, on many other grounds. my sense is that what the romney campaign is doing is tha
